Proud to be white?

I would like to make it clear, for the record, that I am not a racist. There has apparently been some confusion on this point lately, and I want to make sure that everyone knows the Score.

Before I begin my rant, let’s have some background info, shall we?  I grew up middle-class and white in small-town Texas. Racism and discrimination in general are not unheard of around here, and I’m sure that some of those backwards beliefs rubbed off on me – as a kid.  Any racist ideas that I might have had disappeared after serving my country (the citizens of which, I might add, are multi-hued) alongside Marines of every color.  My concept of racism now is simple, and it is this:

The color of your skin does not determine who you are.

There it is. That was easy. Now, bearing this in mind, let’s get to the real meat of the post. A few days ago I recieved the following email from a friend of mine who was apparently tired of being considered a reasonable person. I knew that some of his ideas on race were contrary to mine, but I’ve never brought it up before. However, the fact that I recieved this crap is a sign that he feels I am sympathetic to his views, and that is unacceptable. I have decided to post my reply here, for the simple reason that a private scolding is not always as effective as a public reprimand. When I am done writing, I will use the handy “reply to all” feature to send all the recipients of this junk a link to this post.  That way they can at least have access to both sides…

Here’s the email. Read carefully. Last chance to send the kids out of the room.

Proud To Be  White

Someone finally  said it.
How  many are actually paying attention to  this?

There are  African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian  Americans, Arab Americans, etc.
And then there  are just Americans.

You pass me on  the street and sneer in my direction.
You Call me  “White boy,” “Cracker,” “Honkey,”
“Whitey,”  “Caveman” … And that’s OK.

But when I call  you, Nigger, Kike, Towel head, Sand-nigger,
Camel Jockey,  Beaner, Gook, or Chink … You call me a  racist.

You say that  whites commit a lot of violence against you,
So why are the  ghettos the most dangerous places to live?

You have the United Negro College Fund. You have Martin Luther King
Day. You have  Black History Month. You have Cesar Chavez Day. You
Have Yom  Hashoah You have Ma’uled Al-Nabi You have the NAACP.
You have BET.

If we had WET  (White Entertainment Television)  … We’d be  racists.
If we had a  White Pride Day .. You would call  us racists.
If we had White  History Month .. We’d be  racists.
If we had any  organization for only whites to “advance”  OUR lives  ….
We’d be  racists.

We have a  Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, a Black Chamber of
Commerce, and  then we just have the plain Chamber of Commerce.
Wonder who pays  for that?

If we had a  college fund that only gave white students scholarships
… You know we’d be  racists.  There are over 60 openly proclaimed
Black Colleges  in the   US , yet if there  were “White colleges” ..
THAT would be a  racist college.

In the Million  Man March, you believed that you were marching
For your race  and rights. If we marched for our race and rights,
You would call  us racists.

You are proud  to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you’re
Not afraid to  announce it. But when we announce our white pride  …
You call us  racists.

You rob us,  carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer
Shoots a black  gang member or beats up a black drug-dealer running
From the law  and posing a threat to society  … You  call him a racist.

I am proud.
But, you call me  a racist.

Why is it that  only whites can be racists?

There  is nothing improper about this e-mail.
Let’s  see which of you are proud enough to send it on

Well, well, well.

There are so many things wrong with this that I don’t even know where to start. First of all, we are ALL just Americans. I think that the whole concept of taking pride in the color of your skin is absurd. You have no control over it. None. Part of the cause of our nation’s continued racism is due to people taking pride in silly shit like that. Can’t you be proud of who you are without bringing in the element of pigmentation?

Secondly, I noticed that there was a nice little anti-semitic crack in there. I thought this was about skin color? Funny how irrational hatred can cross those lines so quickly and smoothly.

The ghettos are dangerous because poverty tends to lead to an increase in crime. White kids grow up in ghettos, too. Trailer park, anyone?

I did some research on this little email, and found a much more hateful version of the same letter on the website of a prominent white nationalist party. I won’t link to them, but if you search a little, I’m sure you can find it. The propaganda posted there was much more ignorant, but it bothers me that watered-down propaganda is being circulated by people who claim to be my friends.

The point here is that it’s all racism, and none of it is helping! A recent scientific study showed conclusively that the genetic difference between races is smaller than the difference between people of the same race. So, Jesse Jackson is much more similar to David Duke than he would like to think. Likewise with my white friend and any brown person.

Grow up people. Be proud of your accomplishments, hell, be proud of your failures if you want, just stop being proud of your damned skin color.

  1. It is hard to beleive that this type of ignorance still exists. The type of racism has evolved but not disappeared. It has manifested into an undeground attitude that gets perpetuated by our new mass communications engine. The internet gives an opportunity for all opinions and unfortunately people use it for evil.

The person who wrote that email to begin with had an agenda and worded it from a one sided view. He kept mentioning how minorities get to have special colleges, tv channels, scholarships and more. The word he left out was “minority”. The very nature of the word is that a minority is not equally represented in society. So by nature minorities have less power at every level of society. I do not believe there is racism in a minority pulling together to increase their power. In Congress there is the Black Caucus. No one calls this racist!(That I know of)

Racism exists in every culture. Everyone has preconcieved notions, misconceptions and stereotypes of another race. The ignorance comes to play when someone sees one of these traits manifest in reality then they assume “they” all are like that.

We all fear what we do not know. How are we going to get rid of racism? We’re not. Education helps, but so does exposure. Meeting people of other cultures and learning why they do things that we assume is ignorant or we consider uncivilized. Most of the time the behaviours are explainable and make sense in context.

My experiences parrallel Clay’s. Middle class white kid in the Mid-west. I learned of my ignorances and my families’ while in college and in the Marines. Deep down beyond our color, behaviors and language we all have hopes and dreams, ills and aches, love and hate. We are all made of the same fabric that makes up this unique experiment we call the United States of America.

So I say to this guy who wrote this email or just forwarded it, put yourself into someone elses shoes and walk in them for a day. Your life may be easy, but when you apply for a job and the person who is hiring is a closet racist, what do you think the chances of getting the job is? If we did not allow minorities to come together and gain power in America, that would be racist!

  3. Um, hi… I would just like to bring everyone’s attention to the fact that unless you are 100% Native American, YOU ARE AN IMMIGRANT!!! I don’t care if your great-great-great somebody was the first one off Columbus’ boat… YOUR ANCESTERS WERE NOT BORN HERE…
Now according to the aforementioned e-mail that means you don’t belong here. So to all of you who “sympathize” with the views expressed in said e-mail… go the F___ home! Just some food for thought!

  4. now i am not saying i agree with him on everything in there but there are a few things he nailed right on the head. i am from pa and i didnt grow up in the city but i have been there. i have been called names just because of the music i am listening to at that time and if i would yell a name back who would be at fault me of course. so just saying there are somethings in that e-mail that i do agree with. hate me if you want to but just sit back and read it a couple of times and you might see where he is coming from.

  5. Randy, I do agree with the fact that some of the underlying points deserve some attention. The point I was trying to make is that ANYONE who participates in such activities (no matter what their color) is playing a role in keeping American racism alive.

  6. Clay. I think you nailed it.

  7. First of all, proud to be white? Thats like saying I’m proud to be born with two eyes and a set of functioning ears. Wooohooooo!!!! GO ME!!! Why on earth should one be proud to be white? Our ancestors raped, murdered, enslaved, and horded their way to founding a vast wealthy country. Go white team.

Ignorance abounds in this email. So he must not know that the majority of violent crimes are committed by whites, while the majority of men on death row are black. Yes, the majority of violent crimes are committed by white people. Ghettos can be dangerous places to live but someone needs to let this guy in on something called “the perpetuation of poverty” and how socio-economic concerns relate to one’s future and likelihood of selling a rock on the corner.

Somebody slap this guy. We don’t need WET or White Pride Day cause all we have to do is turn FOX on and we have our WET right there. Our country is run by wealthy white men who shape and write and re-write and revise our history. Why celebrate something as banal and given as that. Thousands marching in Jena, LA is something to celebrate.

Curt makes an excellent point about what it means to be a minority in any society.

I have to say something about the name calling mentioned in the email and by Randy. Just because someone yells a slur out at you does not make it ok. Why is it that people think everyone of a certain color thinks its ok to yell racial slurs out to a white person? Feel free to be insulted at being called anything at all. Ignorance and human sordidness is not bound to skin color. For that matter neither is anything positive us humans stumble into.

  8. well done, levi. I agree with you wholeheartedly.

  9. I think your post does not address the issue of the email. The issue is the hypocrisy of racism.

I totally agree with you that the colour or someone’s skin should not be brought up at all, under any circumstances. In light of this, the email is perfectly correct.

Clay: You must rememeber that native American’s ancestors are not from America either. Even Australian Aboriginals, The oldest unchanged civilization on the planet are not native to Australia.

  11. This is so true… I’ve seen this chain letter 3 times already, and it finally hit me that I wasn’t seeing the “big picture!”

By preceding nouns and proper nouns with race-desciptive adjectives, different races are setting themselves apart from the general public. Each adjective acts like a wall or barrier that keeps us from uniting as one.

The 13 original colonies were not called the “Caucasian States”, but the “New England States”. These were the new territories of England. We named them out of pride for our homeland, not out of rebellious anger, hatred, revenge or vindictiveness. Otherwise, we would not have used the word “England” at all.

However, pride in one’s own race, whether suppressed or flaunted openly, is one of the most racist acts any person can commit. Not only does it set one race apart from the rest, it implies a type of “cold-war revolution” against all other races. And less obvious to most, using race-specific adjectives to describe anything, systematically implies that all other generalizations must be of the “white” race.

Unless the race-related adjectives are dropped, racism will continue forever. If not openly, it will subliminally by the mere nature of our own grammar and foolish pride. Case in point: What is the motivational factor for the continued circulation of the chain letter?

  12. I think you missed the whole point of the email. The point being that racist exist with all races. Yet whites are the ones that are accused of being the biggest racists of all. Whites are entitled to equally point out and speak out when racism is shown toward them. And it does seem as though it’s racist when there are organizations, clubs, colleges, etc. of all one race. If it’s racism when whites exclude other races, then why is it not racism when others are allowed to do so? Apparently… some one got fed up with differences shown and being one sided. I don’t believe in racism of any kind. But I believe what’s fair for one should be fair for all!!

  14. Kath and Don… I think it flew over your head a little bit.

The author of the letter used stereotypes over and over again, and his/her lack of knowledge on these topics is glaring.

I’m gonna write my own blog about this stupid chain letter.

  15. I have read through all the emails on this site and I see the racists postings and it was not the original. One says that we have to let minorities band together to achieve. Racist. That just perpetuates that you have to identify a problem or economic status to a skin color. Once everyone, admits that many of the minority organizations have an economic incentive to keep racism a major complaint, then we can better understand why leaders of all colors are more interested in maintaining power than solving the problem. So it is up to the individuals of each race to stop playing victim and start being an American instead of a white, black or hispanic American. Let’s just be proud of that and not the color of our skin. Let’s celebrate intelligence instead of ignorance. Let’s celebrate personal responsibility and quit blaming everyone elde for our problems.
