Dubya keeps his fingers crossed

After being publicly browbeaten into submission by John McCain into signing the torture ban into law, Dubya gave himself another loophole through which prisoners can be tortured with loud AC/DC singles and forced to show Lyndie England their penises, according to this Boston Globe article.

After approving the bill last Friday, Bush issued a ”signing statement” — an official document in which a president lays out his interpretation of a new law — declaring that he will view the interrogation limits in the context of his broader powers to protect national security. This means Bush believes he can waive the restrictions, the White House and legal specialists said.

What’s the point of even having laws? And perhaps someone would care to explain to me where Presidential interpretation that is utterly contrary to the spirit of the law works into the separation of powers?

It never ceases to amaze me how the Bush administration continues to act with impunity, relying on the ignorance and/or indifference of the general population. Actually, let me take that back. While much of the public does, in fact, live in total ignorance of the world around them, a frightening proportion of Americans actually support torture. To borrow from Robert Steinbeck’s column last week, there appears to be no higher ideal than stopping the next terror attack. If America has any of the moral authority and goodwill that it built up in World War II left, then Dubya is in a mad rush to squander it before his final term expires.

So I give up. William, my prayer vote for Dubya in the Supreme Galactic Chancellor election is on its way into the ether. The Urantian mothership can’t get here soon enough.
